What do you do during the year?  Share your experience participating and teaching in your specific activity area.

During the year, I substitute teach at the high school I graduated from and coach college baseball at SUNY New Paltz.  I’m certified to teach Social Studies in New York State in grades 7-12.  I just finished my third year coaching in college after four years of playing at Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, NY.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

The best part of teaching in school is the day-to-day interactions with students and forming a working relationship over the course of a year or more.  As for coaching, it is seeing a player grow over the course of a season or his career, and develop skills they did not have when they first arrived on campus.  When they finally accomplish or perform something you are teaching, that makes it all worth it.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

The campers this summer should expect to have fun and enjoy the game of baseball first and foremost.  I want to be able to instill some of the passion and joy I get from the game, to the campers who come to play baseball.  Hitting, fielding, pitching, base running, and all other baseball skills will be taught this summer, but just as important will be dealing with failure, something that is so prevalent in baseball, and continuing to improve as a player.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I like to see the kids learning the fundamentals of the game I love.  It is great to see them have fun playing the game of basketball.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I want the kids to be exposed to the fundamentals of the sport in a safe and enjoyable way.

This summer marks the end of my Undergraduate years (I’ll be missing my graduation in July to be at camp) in Sport and Exercise Science. After Summer 2014 I will be moving to London for a Masters course in Strength and Conditioning, working towards a career in fitness and performance.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

One of the most enjoyable aspects of coaching and teaching in this area, for me, is the assessment and development of movement competency and resultant skill competency. This is particularly rewarding working with children as growth forces them to adjust and adapt their movement coordination and skills.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I hope to promote physical activity across camp, not only in my area, to help campers to enjoy being active and healthy. Also, I hope that I can work closely with campers/athletes who love sports at camp, school or home so that we can develop their sports related physical skills.

I am a Business Management graduate and currently work in recruitment. I also work with the Junior Organizer at my golf club.  I’ve played golf since the age of 12 and spend a lot of my time at the golf club, both playing and coaching the junior section.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

Teaching children golf is very rewarding. Golf is a unique sport in the sense that it’s a game for life, and seeing a child catch the golfing “bug” is a great thing, and watching them develop, and take pride in their own development, is even more so!

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

The main goal for campers is to have fun and develop skills simultaneously.  I want campers to develop in all aspects of the game both physically and mentally, as ultimately these skills can be implemented and have a positive impact in other aspects of life.

What do you do during the year?  Share your experience participating and teaching in your specific activity area.

I am currently in my first year at Warwick University, studying Childhood, Education and society. I return to my home in the holidays to work at Torbay Olympic Gymnastics club where I’ve coached gymnastics for the past 7 years.  I started as an assistant coach when I was 12 and went on to complete my level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I love how diverse gymnastics can be; due to the many different types of apparatus and combination of fitness components everyone can be good at something! I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to the gymnasts and watching their confidence grow as they start to understand the different techniques. The excitement is rewarding as they continue to persist to succeed with a skill.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

As every child’s abilities are different I aim to ensure that each gymnast improves on their own techniques and skills. I want each gymnast to set his or her own goals. I feel that it is important for them to feel like they have achieved something each time they leave the gym and be proud of his or her own individual accomplishments at the end of the summer. Most importantly, I want the children to enjoy their time in the gym and see how diverse and enjoyable gymnastics is.

What do you do during the year?  Share your experience participating and teaching in your specific activity area.

I am a Professor in Sport Management at Adelphi University and teach classes to undergraduate and graduate students for the last 12 years.  Some of the classes I teach include Organization and Administration of Coaching, Organization and Administration of Youth Sports Programs, and Sports Facility Administration.  I played professional ice hockey in France and Sweden, working in the New York Islander Organization for a number of years and currently am involved with the New York Ranger’s Youth Development Program.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I thoroughly enjoy giving children the opportunity to try something new.  You do not know if you are good at something until you try it at least once.  Confidence and self-esteem are two elements of every day activities that we will try and meet through our lessons and group activities.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

The skills campers will learn most from every day activities will be to be nice to and create and enjoyable learning environment for everyone.  If campers learn a little bit about hockey that will be a plus.

Mutual Respect + Providing opportunities for success + Leadership Opportunities + Allowing them a voice + Positive Social Interactions = Happy Campers and Great Kids

What do you do during the year?  Share your experience participating and teaching in your specific activity area.

I am currently getting my Masters degree in Adapted Physical Activity at Slippery Rock University. I received a Bachelors degree in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland. I have been playing lacrosse since 3rd grade, two years in college and currently playing club in grad school. I’ve coached for 6 years with Albany Power.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I love lacrosse; I believe it is the greatest sport ever created. What makes it so great is that its not something that comes easy to kids.  Because of this, when a kid succeeds it creates for that much more of a lasting impression. The joy I experience when a child succeeds in a task is what makes lacrosse such a great sport to coach.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I would like my campers to have a positive attitude towards lacrosse and be okay with failing. It is a difficult sport and I would like them to be able to walk away with the basic knowledge of the rules and strategies that relate to more common sports. Hopefully they walk away more excited and engaged than when they arrive!!

The most enjoyable thing is seeing the children develop as soccer players, but most importantly, seeing them develop as people.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

The main goals for the campers are to enjoy themselves and be able to take at least one thing away that is new to them. Be it a life lesson or a soccer skill.

I just completed my Masters degree in Sport-Based Youth Development at Adelphi University, where I also taught Freshman Orientation classes.  In the Spring, I coach Varsity and Junior Varsity Softball  (Grades 4-8) for The East Woods School in Oyster Bay.  I also founded the Lynbrook Softball Little League.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I love creating innovative ways to deliver skills at practice. It’s important to “keep it fun,” while playing and/or learning a new sport.  It’s great to see the enthusiasm and excitement that players bring each day to practice when they know it’s going to be FUN!

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

There are 4 main components to my coaching style:

1. Remember, Hard Work Pays Off!

2. Be Respectful (Of your teammates, your opponents, coaches, officials, the game & of course, yourself!)

3. Stay Focused

4. HAVE FUN!!

Youth sport is not about the wins and losses, but instead I view it as an outlet for kids to play and have fun with their peers. My goal for the campers is for them to come to my activity area with open minds to learn new skills and the willingness to work hard each day. There is no greater feeling than catching your first fly ball, hitting your first homerun, or scoring the go-ahead run, it is my goal to provide the campers with these experiences as ways of tracking improvement, building confidence and making memories at camp.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

While there are so many things I enjoy about teaching, the best part for me is seeing a child work hard to learn a skill that they didn’t think they could.  When that light bulb goes off and the child is hungry to learn more there is nothing better.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

Since last summer, I spent some time with family in Nova Scotia before up and moving to England (sight unseen). Now I’m working as a membership consultant at a gym in London. I’ve also been traveling around the UK and a bit of Europe, and most importantly, eating as much British chocolate as I possibly can.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I can’t wait to be back in the mountains teaching yoga to campers and staff again this year. Last summer was such a massive growing opportunity for me as a teacher and, now that I have a bit more experience under my belt, I’m looking forward to offering a bigger variety of classes to kids and staff.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

It’s fun teaching yoga to the campers because I think it’s an amazing life tool. Yoga promotes increased physical, mental and emotional self-awareness, which is useful in so many aspects of life.   Hopefully this summer, everyone will get the chance to use their yoga skills to be better community members, friends, athletes and leaders.

I have just finished my second year at the University of Central Lancashire where I study Forensic Psychology. I volunteer at the Samaritans, have a part time job and do Archery once a week.  I also hope to become more involved in my Universities Archery team next year.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

Being able to give kids confidence with regards to archery is really rewarding. The activity can seem scary at first so being able to instill confidence and enhance skills is something I really take away from the experience.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I’d like the kids to learn that scoring a bull’s eye (whilst it’s pretty fun) isn’t everything. It’s better to have the arrows all go to the same place than it is to have one go to the bull’s eye and the others go elsewhere. Accuracy and repetition are really important to learning the basics of the sport while keeping safe.

I really hope to open up the camper’s minds and help them to get a real appreciation for nature and a true respect for the environment that comes with fishing.  I also would like them to learn that fishing isn’t just about catching fish but also being at one with nature.

What do you do during the year? Share your experience participating and teaching in your specific activity area.

During the year I am a Fused Glass Artist, business owner , wife and mom to my 5 sons and daughter-in-law. I was fortunate enough to study and learn fused glass from a local fused glass artist who also specialized in creating art programs and lesson plans for school age children. This enabled me to create the program we currently have at CEL.  My business was borne of my research for my position as CCO.  In my ‘down time’ I am also a video editor, photography and have been known to transform my kitchen into a art workshop, sometimes with local kids, and create quilts, painting and various other projects.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I love having to think on my feet and creating projects with and for the kids and staff out of whatever might be around.  One year, my Mom, a Professional Photographer, came to visit and teach a few classes, we were on our way out with a photo class, a few male cabin specialist stopped us and asked me to help with the groups special day project- space suits.  They were a bit late in their request so there was no time to purchase any supplies. So I walked into the office, and came out with sheet protectors, silver duct tape, paper plates, used CD’s and markers.  In about 5 min we had an unbelievable costume the boys made for themselves the next day.  My Mom still tells this as her favorite camp story and uses it to explain why I choose to spend my summers at CEL.  So I guess to answer the question – I love being able to teach that art came be made from whatever materials are available- Recycled, random objects that can be altered and changed into a vision.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I would just love these kids to become more confident in their creativity, be exposed to new and different mediums and to learn respect for the creativity in others. I also want each child to go home with something they created that they and their parents are proud to display.

I enjoy helping people grow and learn.  Echo Lake is a fantastic environment to do just that.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

My goal is always to empower and inspire people if at all possible.

I’d like to help the campers write and record/produce songs they have written, and also expose them to new possibilities and ideas through music.

It differs, but generally to have the tools and information they need to pursue making music away from camp if they have that interest.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I enjoy bringing stories to life with kids. Having them learn about the world through the art of theatre, and possibly sparking in them their creative self.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I want the kids to learn about each other. One of the many powers that performance arts can bring is confidence in both yourself and the community. Shows only work if everyone is involved to create together. Also, most importantly, it is critical to have FUN!!

I am currently at University studying Outdoor Education.  I go canoe and kayaking, as well as rock climbing and mountain biking.  I have canoed from Fort William to Inverness 70 miles.  It took me 3 days, canoeing across the lock ness with a group of 10 friends.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

It is massively satisfying when you see someone achieve the skills that you have been teaching him or her.  Once they learn the skills canoeing and kayaking can become a really good adventure and the possibilities are endless.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

I want campers to learn basic water safety and how to maneuver the boats.  Hopefully they will be able to play games and have a really good time but safely.

During the year I study International Economic Relations. I am graduating this year. I am a freelance photographer and hobbyist filmmaker. I have been sailing for 13 years now, both inland and on seas.   I even survived a storm on the Baltic Sea! Sailing has taught me patience and to pay attention to details.

What is it you enjoy most about teaching the skills in your activity area to children?

I enjoy watching children stepping outside their comfort zone. Some of them are afraid at the beginning, but quickly adapt to the boat tilting and sails switching sides. The initial struggle to understand direction of the wind is quickly replaced by a massive smile on their faces when they finally steer the boat in the direction they wanted.

What are some goals you have for the campers who come into your activity area?  What skills do you want them walking away with having gained?

This year we would love to make sailing trips more exciting and diverse. The goal is to explore new areas and incorporate a sense of discovery everyday. Sailing teaches patience and requires attention span to be longer than in other disciplines. The only way to teach kids to appreciate those values is by making it feel rewarding and fun!
